Chapter Fourteen

Trip

I jumped at the loud knocking on the bathroom door. I’d been so caught up in my crying that I hadn’t been paying attention to any of the sounds around me. What kind of highly trained agent was I?

“Trip? Is everything okay in there?” Milo called through the door. The handle jiggled, but the lock held.

I tried swallowing back my sobs, but I only choked out a single word, “Yes.”

“I heard a thump and knocked on the bedroom door. When no one answered the door, I had to come and check. Are you sure you’re okay?” Grant sounded anxious. “Have you hurt yourself?”

“No, no. I’m fine,” I managed.

“Are Lee and Cat in there with you?”

“They… they’re fine.” I stumbled over my words, for some reason not wanting to lie to them.

There was a long pause, and I held my breath, hoping that they would leave. But alas, they hadn’t.

“Trip, sweetheart. Open the door, please.” Aiken’s voice was muffled, but even from my hiding place in the tub, I heard every word.

A new flood of tears ran down my cheeks. Sweetheart? When was the last time someone called me that? Never. Did Aiken feel this strange connection too? Or was I just so desperate for anything that I was imagining it?

He knocked again. What would it be like if I opened the door? Not just the one to the bathroom, but the one leading to my heart. What if I allowed myself to be comforted by them?

“We aren’t going away, banana pudding,” Milo coaxed.

I let out a wet, choked laugh. Who makes up a pet name like that? The guy seemed fixated on the stuff.

Still, I hesitated. I wanted to open that door. The more I thought about it, the more I wanted it. I had nothing left to lose. And they couldn’t break a heart that was already shattered. Would it really be so wrong to let them comfort me?

My chest heaved as my sobs grew harder.

A fist slammed into the door, followed by Grant’s begging voice. “Blondie, we can hear you crying, and it’s ripping us up. You don’t really know us, but we would do anything to ease your pain right now. Please, say we can come in.”

“Do you think it would help if we mentioned how we defied orders and probably got ourselves blacklisted so we could save her?” Milo’s whisper wasn’t meant for me to hear, but I heard every word.

“Do you want to stress her out more? She doesn’t need to know that right now,” Aiken hissed.

“Hey! I just thought it might help her trust us if she knew we would do anything and go up against anyone for her,” Milo said defensively.

Their whispered argument on the other side of the door tore away the last of my resistance. They weren’t trying to play me or string me along. For whatever reason, these men were drawn to me just as much as I was drawn to them.

“I’m coming in. Okay?” Milo asked. The question seemed strange, like he was used to giving orders and not waiting for permission.
